HUDSON VALLEY

The clients approached us with an old home that had been practically demolished by a storm in recent years. Despite the overwhelming damage to the property, the bones of the structure told the story of an 18th century homestead with several small outbuildings to store livestock, crops, and equipment while operating a small farm. Over the last few centuries, many additions had altered the original plan, and the outbuildings had been left to decay.

We believed that the foundations of the house were important, as they spoke to the history of the region. After puzzling out the original structure and assessing the fragmented elements, we found that very little of the materials were salvageable. We preserved the original foundation, a few walls that were still usable, and the chimney. Incorporating those original elements, we proposed a new design that adhered to the original spirit of the site.

In its next life, this is a modern home that retains the architectural themes and story of the Hudson Valley homestead. The main house is currently under construction. We intend to restore the small fruit orchard on the property as well, and refurbish the crumbling outbuildings as studio spaces, storage, and guest residences.
