944 PARK AVENUE
The clients purchased an entire floor of this apartment building to serve as a pied-à-terre. They decided to modify the window apertures and gut renovate the floor in order to brighten it and give it a modern, open plan that better aligned with their tastes.
We negotiated with the Landmarks Preservation Commission to resize windows at the rear façade to flood the entire space with light. We maximized the borrowed light by opening the floorplan, combining the living, dining, breakfast, and library into one large space. Knocking out the existing walls left large steel columns that we dressed with fluted teak millwork, designed to create separation between living and dining zones.
The clients often entertain. In order to provide more control over the space, we designed large jib doors, 5 feet wide by 9 feet tall, between the dining and living rooms. Completely hidden when not in use, the doors create the option to convert from a large collective space to more intimate sections. We sourced antique Zuber wallpaper showcasing "Les Vues du Bresil" to cover the back of the jib doors. These scenes infuse their New York apartment with Brazilian cultural references from their homeland, adding personal touches to conjure memories and inspire conversations at dinner parties.
