EAST 64TH STREET
Combining modern sensibilities with traditional architecture a favorite challenge as a studio. Our clients tasked us to pare down their historic apartment and open it up for their growing family.
Working with the constraints of city and surrounding landmarked buildings, we were able to expand the living space while replacing outdated electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems with newer, more efficient ones. The complete gut renovation resulted in a greener living space with less noise pollution, additional ceiling height, doubled kitchen square footage, and an additional office and bathroom.
The blend of old and new plays out as a story that unfolds from room to room. The new Parquet de Versailles and restoration of the plaster moldings and oak paneling is a nod to the historic details of the apartment. The kitchen and bathrooms are a departure from tradition, but they fit in the context of the gradual transitions between spaces. The renovated apartment showcases an austere yet comfortable classicism, that centers quality materials and craftsmanship to humanize its minimalism. This restrained sophistication nods to the past, while giving the home a new life for many years to come.
